Bilateral stimulation facilitates reconnecting images, self-thoughts, emotions, and body sensations that have "become stuck" through contained and measured therapeutic process. EMDR therapy's goal is to release what is maladaptive and secure adaptive self-thoughts, emotions, and body sensations associated with the traumatic experiences.

Bipolar disorders include several specific diagnoses, but all are marked by emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). Family history and mental health history over the course of a person's life help clarify diagnoses and treatment.
